Dell Design Library
Dell.com is designed and built using a series of patterns, templates, and interaction documents which are kept online in an internal pattern library called the Dell Design Library or Deslib for short. This library of patterns is used primarily by internal teams of designers, architects and developers at Dell but is also shared externally with agency partners.
Problem:
Information Architects developed wireframes for the new site and I designed the look of the new library and laid out over a dozen pages to help show how the new library would function and what a user might see as they navigate through the site. One major improvement over the original library is the ability to search for specific patterns using keyword searches, dropdown menus, and filters to get to the information they needed. Since some developers and designers have different needs, this version of the design library uses personas to filter the content you would see as you logged into the design library. You can always switch views, but for the most part, this method helped users get to the content that was most relevant to their discipline quickly.
The old library was basically laid out as a sitemap which was hard to navigate and due for a major design overhaul. (Not pictured)
Solution:
Specs view with filters on the right.
Pattern view with description at the top and additional filters to the right. At the bottom of the page is a vertical carousel showing thumbnails and descriptions of pattern variations and a large view of the selected pattern variation to the right.
Completed page template.
